When most people discuss anything related to getting more active and exercise, it is often perceived as painful and stressful. Well guess what, it doesn’t have to be painful or stressful. Being more active can actually be fun and stress less. It is easy to do things that make us feel good, so why not use things that we enjoy to get moving at the same time?
I have 3 fun and easy ways to help you and your family get moving and become more fit.
Be sure before you start any of the below that you find and clear a safe space where you can move freely.
Go Outside and Play a Game
The game can be whatever you want. It can be as simple as a game of tag with your kids or significant other. Make it a challenge, such as last one tagged has to take out the trash or wash the dishes.
Maybe you live near a high traffic road, consider movement exercises based on the type of vehicle that passes by for 20-30 minutes. Here are some suggestions jumping jacks for cars, squats for SUVs, and push ups for pick up trucks.
Also, consider going for a bike ride, running around the neighborhood, skipping, or even jump rope. Take a stopwatch and time yourself, work continually to try to beat your best record.
Do this a couple times a week and get some Vitamin D in the process on those sunny days.
Take Advantage of TV Commercial Breaks
TV commercial breaks are a great time to get up and move in 3-5 minute increments. Make a list of exercises and during each commercial start at the top and try to complete the list. I recommend starting with 3-4 exercises for each for 30 seconds.
During an hour show it is possible to get 15 minutes of exercise in. (Exercises that you might try based on your exercise space are jogging in place, high knees, push ups, or planks).
Select 2-3 shows to do this workout throughout the week to get part of your daily movement in.
Turn Up The Music and Dance
This can be done anytime of the day from your home or private office. Make a playlist of 2-3 of your favorite songs and turn the music up! It doesn’t matter if you can or can’t dance. Use this time to relive the days of your youth or just brush off your dance moves. Rotate through your song list 2-4 times a day for a full day of active movement.
If inviting your family to join in make it a dance party and vote for who has the best moves.
So now that you have 3 fun and easy ways to get fit, grab a notepad to write down your ideas so you don’t forget. Your notes should include a list of exercises, television shows that you watch, and a list of favorite songs to download.
Now go ahead and get moving!
